Helping Hands
Our Parish Family caring for each other extending a helping hand for the moment when a helping hand is needed
Who We Are
Helping Hands are parishioners who volunteer our time, talents and treasure to help members of our parish family in times of transition or emergency situations.
Helping Hands recognize that at some time everyone needs help in coping with sudden illness and unforeseen circumstances, and we also recognize how difficult it is to ask for that help.
Helping Hands realize that our prayers, care and support for those in need can make a difference.
Helping Hands are standing by, willing to help and waiting for the opportunity to be earth angels.
Who We Help
Any person registered with Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church may receive assistance from Helping Hands. A parishioner or family caregiver must call a Helping Hands Coordinator with a specific request for help or information. All assistance is then scheduled by a Helping Hands Coordinator, each and every time a request is made for help.
What We Do
Helping Hands step in to help wherever needed, providing temporary assistance until other solutions can be found. Helping Hands provide transportation to Mass, to medical facilities and treatment centers, as well as to important necessary personal appointments.
Helping Hands may pick-up and deliver groceries and supplies for a homebound parishioner or provide escort transportation to those wishing to shop or run errands who are unable to drive. Helping Hands may also prepare a meal and provide other short-term assistance.
Helping Hands are the voices who call the names on the parish prayer list. Helping Hands send regular sunshine greeting cards and visit parishioners who are homebound or in residence at Lake Forest in the Village, Village Springs Health and Rehabilitation and Mt. Carmel Community in the Village.
Helping Hands sit with a patient to provide respite for caregivers, pray with a patient or their families, and simply listen when someone needs to talk.
How to Volunteer
Complete a volunteer application, noting the tasks you are comfortable doing for someone else and the times you are available. Application forms are available in the Helping Hands station above the credenza in the Narthex. Follow the directions on the form and MAIL the completed application to the address listed at the bottom.
Coordinators compile a list of volunteers and call members when service is needed and requested. A wide variety of tasks requires many volunteers with many different talents. Opportunities exist for everyone to help someone.
New volunteers are always needed, especially drivers. Likewise, men who can assist with our male parishioners are always in demand. How often volunteers are called depends on the number of parishioners requesting help and the number of available volunteers at any given time. We try to call no more than once a month.
We rotate assignments so that all volunteers have the opportunity to serve. Volunteers serve at their own convenience. If you cannot help when called, no excuses are ever necessary, and above all, you need not feel guilty. We will simply call you another time with another opportunity.
Consider becoming a Helping Hands Volunteer. The more parishioners who become involved, the more successful Helping Hands will be. When we help another, we feel good about ourselves. Those we assist are truly grateful.
